Steven Kalkanis, M.D., served as the inaugural president of the partnership. He is CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group and CEO of Henry Ford Hospital. It’s the first time in Henry Ford Health’s history that its primary academic and complex care hub and medical group are under singular physician leadership. His expanded role came on the heels of the system and key partners having announced a $2.5 billion investment to reimagine Henry Ford’s academic healthcare campus and its surrounding neighborhood in Detroit.

Kalkanis joined Henry Ford in 2004 after completing neurosurgical training at the Harvard - Massachusetts General Hospital program. In May 2014, he was named chair of Henry Ford’s Department of Neurosurgery. He also served as medical director of Henry Ford Cancer, leading the development of the new cancer pavilion in Detroit.

Kalkanis earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. An internationally recognized brain tumor expert, he served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the largest association of its kind. He was also named a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the official accrediting and credentialing body for all neurosurgeons practicing in the U.S. He has served as a visiting professor and guest lecturer for more than 100 national and international audiences and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.
