New and expanded academic programs

  • MSU Campus in Detroit
  • CHM adds departments
  • Accelerated Second Degree BSN
  • Osteopathic Medicine Growing Together

Matched Tab 1Established in 2022, the MSU College of Human Medicine Detroit Campus at Henry Ford Hospital is uniquely positioned to provide students with comprehensive training in a tertiary and quaternary care environment.

Approximately 30 third- and fourth-year medical students complete their clerkships through this campus. Service learning and volunteer opportunities help students become active in the Detroit community through street medicine, free medical clinics, shelters, community health and social services, as well as mentoring premedical students.

College of Human Medicine adds departments Six new departments in the MSU College of Human Medicine – dermatology, otolaryngology, pathology, radiation oncology, urology, and neurosurgery – are made possible by the Henry Ford Health + MSU Health Sciences partnership.

Each new department will be statewide with faculty from Detroit to Marquette, although the majority of faculty will be based at Henry Ford Health in southeast and south central Michigan. These six departments are expanding the educational and research opportunities for College of Human Medicine students and improve their access to residency programs in those medical specialties.

Accelerated Second Degree BSN The health care community needs a highly qualified nursing workforce prepared for the challenges of the future. Thanks to the collaboration between Henry Ford and MSU, the ABSN program has expanded to allow more MSU nursing students to complete it at the Henry Ford campuses.

Henry Ford Health and MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) have a long-standing partnership that continues to grow. As active members of MSU COM’s Statewide Campus System, Henry Ford hospitals in Grand Blanc, Jackson, Macomb, Madison Heights, Warren and Wyandotte continue to expand opportunities for MSU students.

MSU COM is partnering with Henry Ford Hospital on a new Scholarly Activity Clerkship Pilot program. The program aims to integrate more research into students’ clerkship years, ultimately inspiring more students and residents to engage in research while improving patient safety, quality of care and other important clinical outcomes.

Professional Development

Together, we are fostering continuous learning, professional development and engagement across our Henry Ford and MSU communities.

New programs creating synergy across the partnership include Henry Ford + MSU INSPIRE (Initiative for Nursing Support of Publications and Innovations in Research and Education), which is enhancing nursing scholarship by connecting Henry Ford Health nurses and MSU College of Nursing faculty.

Collaborations Beyond Health Sciences

Education ConstructionConnections across MSU’s 17 degree-granting colleges are being made with Henry Ford Health experts, proving the synergistic power of the partnership. The MSU College of Engineering is one example of the opportunities available through the partnership. In 2024, three senior capstone projects within the college featured collaborations with Henry Ford:

  • MSU Civil and Environmental Engineering students engaged with the design and construction teams to better understand the Henry Ford + MSU Research Center. This included a site visit soon after construction of the foundation system was initiated.
  • The Modernizing Robotic Surgery Education system created with Henry Ford and MSU engineering students reduces how many trials it takes a modern learner to gain expert-level status for each educational task.
  • Clinicians at Henry Ford and faculty at MSU are excited to connect to accelerate new discoveries that impact our communities but are challenged to find each other easily. The Research Synergy Vanguard Portal (RSVP) explored solutions for automated connections with a platform that automatically suggests potential collaborators.
