Henry Ford Health Chair of Anesthesiology Appointed to Dual Role in MSU Partnership

Aug. 22, 2022 – Henry Ford Health’s Michael C. Lewis, M.D., will serve as the interim chair of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Department of Anesthesiology, a new statewide department. He is the second doctor to hold a dual chair role within the two organizations since the forming of the transformative Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences partnership in 2021.

Dr. Lewis will be based at the College of Human Medicine’s newest community campus at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The campus was also established through the Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences partnership. Dr. Lewis’ appointment and the department creation reinforce the power and potential of the relationship.

Dr. Lewis will continue in his role as the Joseph L. Ponka Chair in the Henry Ford Health Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine.

“As an internationally respected anesthesiologist, Dr. Lewis is a true asset to Henry Ford Health, and we are thrilled to see him take on this important new role within the Health Sciences partnership,” said Steven Kalkanis, M.D., president of Henry Ford Health + MSU Health Sciences.

“Having Dr. Lewis in this role will allow for our organizations to continue to make great strides in groundbreaking research and uniquely position us to increase our commitment to medical education.”

“While Dr. Lewis’ department is based at our Detroit campus, this is a statewide department, which will begin supporting the educational opportunities in anesthesia for College of Human Medicine students in our eight statewide community campuses,” said Aron Sousa, MD, the dean of MSU College of Human Medicine.

A native of London, England, Dr. Lewis earned both undergraduate and medical degrees from University College London. After completing his internship and initial anesthesia training, Dr. Lewis moved to Israel where he lived for several years before moving to the United States in 1990. He completed his internship at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Lewis subsequently trained and held anesthesiology faculty and leadership appointments at the University of Miami. He was Chair at the University Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville. He joined Henry Ford Health as Chair in 2015.

In 2021, MSU’s Richard Leach, M.D., was named Henry Ford Health’s Chair of Women’s Health Services, becoming the first physician to hold dual chair roles since the inception of Henry Ford Health + Michigan State Univeristy Health Sciences.
